Option E1:   Option C with Additional Shift for Late Elementary Schools

NOTE: This page describes models presented in October 2015 based on the work of the AACPS School Start Times Task Force. To review Superintendent George Arlotto’s proposal to shift school start and dismissal times in the 2017-2018 school year, click here .

All schools shift 30 minutes later than current start time, but no elementary schools dismiss later than 4:15 PM.

With this option, high school begins 30 minutes later than current start time, middle school begins 30 minutes later, and elementary school begins 30 minutes later. However, the start times of the two latest elementary schools are adjusted so that no elementary school ends later than 4:15  PM.

Estimated Annual Cost: $1,800,000

This option will require approximately 30 additional buses. Ten of these additional buses will be used to transport students to  nonpublic  special education facilities, students who are currently transported by buses that also service our traditional high schools. Because Option E1 rearranges the start and dismissal times for our two elementary schools who would dismiss after 4:15pm (now placing them earlier in the day), this option requires the use of 20 additional buses to transport students attending those two elementary schools. NOTE:  When you move these two late schools to earlier in the day, there are no buses available for transport, thus the need to purchase or contract approximately 20 additional buses.

Option E2:   Option C with Additional Shift for Late Elementary and Middle Schools

All schools shift 30 minutes later than current start time, but no elementary or middle schools dismiss later than 4:15 PM.

With this option, high school begins 30 minutes later than current start time, middle schools begins 30 minutes later, and elementary schools begins 30 minutes later. However, the start times of the two latest elementary schools and the four latest middle schools are adjusted so that no schools end later than 4:15PM.

Estimated Annual Cost: $7,020,000

This option will require approximately 117 additional buses. Ten of these additional buses will be used to transport students to  nonpublic  special education facilities, students who are currently transported by buses that also service our traditional high schools. Because Option E2 rearranges the start and dismissal times for our elementary and middle schools who would dismiss after 4:15pm (now placing them earlier in the day), this option requires the use of 20 additional buses to transport students attending those two elementary schools and the use of 87 additional buses to transport students attending those four middle schools. NOTE:  When you move these six late schools to earlier in the day, there are no buses available for transport, thus the need to purchase or contract approximately 107 additional buses.

The Pros and Cons of Option E1 and E2 are very similar to those for Option C. Click here to see Option C Pros and Cons.
