Kindergarten and Grade 1 Assessments
In AACPS, the only required assessments we have for our kindergarten and 1st grade students is the Kindergarten Readiness Assessment (for select students only) and the Fountas and Pinnell (F&P). F&P was developed to determine student’s independent and instructional reading levels. Teachers work with students individually and allow students to read to teachers in a one-on one environment. This dedicated, individual time allows teachers to observe individual student reading behaviors, engage in comprehension conversations that go beyond retelling, and make informed decisions that connect assessment to instruction. Teachers use the results from the F&P system to support students in their efforts to become independent readers.
Although teachers use the results of these assessments to determine next steps for students, F&P does not affect a student's grade and should not be thought of as a "test."
In addition to F&P, 1st grade teachers have access to district mathematics checkpoints that they may choose to give to 1st grade students.

During the F&P Administration, each child spends about 20 -- 30 minutes reading one-on-one with his/her teacher to monitor individual student progress in reading skills. This session takes place during the regular school day. |
* The 2016-2017 fall administration will be in from October 4 -- November 11. The winter administration will be January 24 -- February 28. The spring administration will be May 1 -- May 31. Select students will take the winter administration.
